Can vitamin B cause acne? is a common question asked by many people who suffer from acne. There are medical studies that revealed an overconsumption of B vitamins could lead to the development of acne. Over the past ten years the vitamin supplement industry has grown enormously. Acne vulgaris or cystic acne as it can also be called is a skin condition that causes red spots and pimples to to appear on the surface of the skin. During this time the body produces high levels of testosterones which can cause the onset of acne in certain people. There is still no cure for acne although there are many medications on the market that can help treat and control the condition.

Can Vitamin B Complex Cause Acne

The B complex include the vitamins B6 and B12 which have been linked to causing acne in people when taken in large doses. A medical study undertaken by EH Sheretz at the Bowman Grey School of Medicine, Carolina found that taking high doses of the complex B vitamins exacerbated the symptoms of  acne rosacea.

The medical study also found the symptoms of acne did not improve when common treatments where applied, but did improve when the intake of the vitamin B was stopped.

Medical experts have still to put a finger on the exact reason why vitamin B can cause acne. A possible reason could be related to the vitamin causing an adverse reaction with follicular epithelium cells that are found in the hair follicle. The adverse reaction with these cells could be a possible reason why the areas around the hair follicle become red and inflamed.

Taking High Doses Of Vitamin B

Can vitamin B cause acne has been the central remit of a number of medical studies. The studies findings have have identified possible links that too much vitamin B can cause acne but, there is still more research needed to fully validate this. However, these medical studies are identifying potential trends that taking and excess amount of  vitamin B12 could increase your risk of acne or make the existing condition exacerbate.

The complex B vitamins work in combination with each other and play an essential role in maintaining the health of the body. However, many supplements actually contain vitamin B that is over the RDA. If you are taking supplements in addition to your diet and your acne symptoms have got worse then you should check with your doctor.

People who cannot absorb the nutrients from their food properly may have a  deficiency and may require supplements or even vitamin B12 injections in order to receive the recommended daily allowance. Vitamin B12 Study On Alzheimer's Shows Promising Results

Medical research has found that as the brain shrinks it can increase the risk of cognitive impairment which many consider to be the first warning signs that could lead to more serious conditions affecting the human brain.

Common symptoms of an aging body and brain are often associated with memory loss or speech impairment with many believing that these signs could signal the onset of dementia and even conditions like Alzheimer’s.

So what has vitamin B12 got to with all this. Well, vitamin B12 or cobalamin to give it its medical term plays an important role in protecting the brain. B12 also protects and assists the functioning of the body’s central nervous system which controls our speech.

Jane Hughes, the health correspondent for BBC news recently reported on a medical study regarding the role of vitamin B12 and the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease in the elderly.

“A new study suggests high doses of B vitamins may halve the rate of brain shrinkage in older people experiencing some of the warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease.

“The study, published in the journal Public Library of Science One, looked at 168 elderly people experiencing levels of mental decline known as mild cognitive impairment.”

One of the key reasons for undertaking this medical study was that symptoms of cognitive impairment such as forgetfulness and problems with speech could not be conveniently put down to us getting older. Therefore, this studies objective wanted to determine if higher doses of vitamin B12 can help reduce brain shrinkage.

Vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms have been associated with memory loss, loss of coordination and depression.

As we get older are brain reduces in size. As Jane points out,

“The average brain shrinks at a rate of 0.5% a year after the age of 60. The brains of those with mild cognitive impairment shrink twice as fast. Alzheimer’s patients have brain shrinkage of 2.5% a year.”

This medical study involved 168 elderly volunteers. Half of the volunteers were given a pill that contained folic acid and vitamin B6 and B12. The levels given were higher than the recommended daily allowance. The remaining volunteers were given a placebo.

This study was conducted by the Oxford Project and lasted for a two year period. At the end of  the study the brain size of both volunteers in the vitamin B complex group and placebo group were measured. The results were very interesting,

“The team, from the Oxford Project to investigate Memory and Ageing (Optima), found that on average, in those taking vitamin supplements, brain shrinkage slowed by 30%.” 

“In some cases it slowed by more than 50%, making their brain atrophy no worse than that of people without cognitive impairment.” 

The Role Of Homocysteine 

In recent times there has been an increased focus on a substance called homocysteine. This is a type of protein produced from the amino acid methionene. Vitamin B complex is needed to convert homocysteine in order to benefit the body. High levels of homocysteine have been linked to a number of serious conditions and diseases such as heart disease. High levels have also been linked to brain shrinkage.

It is this synopsis that led the authors of the study to believe that the increase of vitamin B aided the protection of the brain. As Jane reported,

“The study author, Professor David Smith, said the results were more significant than he had expected.”

“It’s a bigger effect than anyone could have predicted,” he said, “and it’s telling us something biological. ”

“These vitamins are doing something to the brain structure – they’re protecting it, and that’s very important because we need to protect the brain to prevent Alzheimer’s.”

More Research Is Needed 

Although, the results of this study look promising many have emphasised the need for further research to determine whether high doses of vitamin B complex can actually decrease the risk of people getting Alzheimer’s disease.

This view was also supported by the Alzheimer’s Research Trust who co funded the medical study,

“These are very important results, with B vitamins now showing a prospect of protecting some people from Alzheimer’s in old age,” said chief executive Rebecca Wood. 

“The strong findings must inspire an expanded trial to follow people expected to develop Alzheimer’s.” 

The Need To Be Cautious 

Studies linking the possibility of vitamin B in helping to reduce dementia and Alzheimer’s are in their infancy. Although, the initial findings look positive many medical experts are emphasizing the need to be cautious when it comes to taking vitamin B12 supplements.

In Jane’s report Chris Kennard, chair of the Medical Research Council’s Neuroscience’s and Mental Health Board, said:

“We must be cautious when recommending supplements like vitamin B as there are separate health risks if taken in too high doses.” 

“Further research is required before we can recommend the supplement as a treatment for neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s.” 

Vitamins such as B12 can be found in many of the foods we eat. The vitamin is most abundant in red meat, fish and dairy products that include eggs and milk.

Vitamin B 12 deficiency neurological symptoms are not as uncommon as many people may think. Vitamin B12 is vital in many areas of maintaining the health of the human brain. However, B12 (cobalamin) has also the important role of protecting the body’s central nervous system. Our central nervous system consists of the brain and the spinal chord. From the above quote the Linus Pauling Institute refer to the condition megaloblastic anemia. If you are not familiar with this condition then, I will briefly explain what it is. Megaloblastic anemia is a condition that inhibits the synthesis of the body’s DNA. The repercussions of this result in the body not producing sufficient red blood cells as quickly and as efficiently as before.

One of the key concerns is the issue of nerve damage. There are a number of theories about how the nerves are damaged in relation to B12 deficiencies. Studies have shown that B12 is needed to covert homocysteine into methionine and this in turn is needed to produce beneficial substances called SAM or s-denosyl methionine. SAM helps to balance the body’s biochemistry. SAM is also needed to help form the myelin sheath that protects the nerve cells.

However, if the conversion of homocysteine is hindered in any way then the levels of homocysteine increase and the levels of SAM decrease. Medical studies have revealed that elevated levels of homocysteine can lead to serious health conditions such as cancer, stroke and heart disease.

How People Become Deficient In Vitamin B12

B12 deficiencies are more common than many people think. The United States Department of Agriculture undertook research study in small town in the U.S and found that,

“Nearly two-fifths of the U.S. population may be flirting with marginal vitamin B12 status if the population of Framingham, Mass., is any indication.”

“A careful look at 3,000 men and women in the ongoing Framingham Offspring Study found 39 percent with plasma B12 levels in the “low normal” range–below 258 picomoles per liter.”

One surprising finding that came out of this study was that deficiencies where found equally in the old and young. This is interesting because B12 deficiencies are commonly associated with the elderly.

One of the most common ways that patients have a cobalamin deficiencyis due to malabsorption. This is when the body and in particular the digestive system can no longer absorb the nutrients from the food that is eaten. Malabsorption can be caused by a number of health conditions.

Individuals who do not absorb vitamin B 12 properly might have a condition called pernicious anemia. This is an autoimmune disease that inhibits the bodies digestive system to produce a protein that is essential for the absorption of B12 and other vitamins. This protein is called the intrinsic factor.

However, conditions such as pernicious anemia are severe cases and these can indicate a long term deficiency. In the beginning vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms can be feelings of lethargy and fatigue,muscle weakness and memory loss. As we pointed out conditions such as pernicious can result in severe deficiencies of B12 however, there are more benign factors that can also have an impact. For example, if you smoke or drink alcohol then, these habits can also inhibit your absorption of B12.

People who are on prescription anti depression drugs or medications to treat conditions such as diabetes are also more susceptible.

Treatment of Vitamin B12 Deficiency Neurological Symptoms

Ironically the diagnosis of symptoms related to B12 deficiencies are quite easy and low cost especially compared to the cost of not treating conditions caused by the deficiencies.

The correct treatment will always depend on the primary cause that creates the symptoms in the first place. For example, the condition pernicious anemia or similar digestive gastrointestinal conditions such as IBS or Crohns Disease will need long term treatment as these conditions are prolonged.

Recently a good friend of mine asked ”can you take too much B12?” I know quite a lot about B12 as I have taken it for a number of years as it has helped with improving my energy levels.

Vitamin B12 or cyanocobalamin is part of the B complex vitamin family that also includes the other well known B2 and B6 vitamins. B12 is water soluble and can be stored in the body for up to 7 years. It is essential for the development and maintenance of the bodies red blood cells and the formation of DNA. It also plays a vital role in the protection and function of the bodies central nervous system from nerve damage.

In recent years the benefits of taking vitamin B12 has received an increased profile through the media and nutritional experts. This higher profile has created a greater demand for B12 making it widely used as vitamin supplement. B12 can be absorbed naturally through a diet that contains foods high in B12. Can You Take Too Much B12 While Pregnant

A women will to need increase her intake of certain vitamins and minerals to meet the demands of pregnancy. One key vitamin is B9 which is better known as folic acid. This nutrient helps to reduce the risk of child defects that include spina bifida.

During pregnancy their is a greater risk of being deficient in B6 and B12 than having too much of it. A recent study by the National Institutes of Health at Trinity College,  Dublin studied low levels of vitamin B12 in pregnant women. The study revealed that there may a greater risk of Neural Tube defects during pregnancy with women who have low levels of vitamin B12.

Due to the demands put on the body during pregnancy levels of B12 can drop. Therefore, medical experts  recommend that pregnant women should increase their RDA intake of vitamin B12. The recommended daily allowance for women during pregnancy is 2.8 micrograms (mcg).

Pregnant women who are eating a vegan or vegetarian food diet have a greater risk of having vitamin B12 deficiency. This is due to the fact that the main source of this nutrient is derived from red meat, fish and dairy products. Therefore, women who fall into the vegetarian or vegan food category need to supplement their diet with vitamin B12.

The common symptoms associated with B12 deficiency are numbness and tingling in the feet and hands, fatigue and muscle weakness.

Again there is no concrete evidence that an excess intake of B12 will lead to serious health issues or B12 toxicity. However, you should always try and stay with in the recommended daily allowance. If you suspect that you are deficient then it may be worth taking a blood test to identify your current levels of B12. If the blood test reveals a deficiency then your doctor or physician can recommend a daily amount to suit your needs.

Can you take too much B12 supplement is another common question that people ask. As stated above if you are in general good health you should have enough of B12 in your body. People who have problems absorbing nutrients  can take more than the recommended daily amount of a B12 supplement and still absorb insufficient amounts to maintain optimum health. Vitamin B12 has an essential role in the bodies metabolism. This is the process of breaking down the food we eat and converting it into energy for the body to function and move. Having a deficiency in B12 can reduce the effectiveness of the body to convert food into the energy in order for us to function effectively during the day. The hampering of this conversion process depletes energy levels in the body making the person tired and fatigued. More chronic symptoms could indicate chronic fatigue syndrome.

A lack of the vitamin can also increase tiredness as B12 is essential in the creation of red blood cells that transfer oxygen through the blood stream. Deficiencies in B12 can lead to a condition called anemia which is an inability of the body to produce sufficient red blood cells. This further reduces the bodies energy levels as existing oxygen levels that are already depleted, need to be rerouted in order to supply the brain and the functioning of the major organs.

Numbing And Tingling Sensations

Vitamin  B12 plays a vital role in the functioning of the bodies central nervous system. Our nervous system has several essential functions that include regulating the bodies blood pressure and bladder control. It also controls the bodies muscles and our sensory nerves which carry messages to the brain to creates sensations of pain, heat and cold.

Our nerves have an outer protective coating or sheath which is maintained by vitamin B12. A lack of B12 in the body can result in the nerve coatings becoming eroded over time and exposing and damaging the nerve endings. This may lead to a condition known as peripheral neuropathy. This can result in numbness and tingling in the feet, weak muscles and sensations of shooting pain through the arms and legs.

High Homocysteine Levels

Homocysteine is a protein that is produced from an amino acid called methionine. Homocysteine occurs naturally in the body and the complex vitamins of B2, B6 and B12 help to convert this protein into a substance called glutamine (the body’s most important antioxidant) and a methyl donor called SAMe which is a an important nutrient for the body and brain functioning.

However, with a  lack of the B vitamins in your diet the enzymes that turn homocysteine into beneficial substances do not work as effectively. As the homocysteine cannot be converted effectively its levels rise and too much in the body can cause heath problems

In conjunction with folic acid the B12 vitamin can help to reduce homocysteine levels. Recent studies have revealed a link between high levels of the amino acid homocysteine and higher risk of getting heart disease and stroke.

Difficulty Breathing

Shortness of breath can be linked to a number of conditions. These can include respiratory problems such as bronchitis, asthma or other complications linked to lung disease. Finding it difficult to breath after exerting the body can also be linked to a deficiency in nutrients such as essential vitamins. These vitamins can include the B complex vitamins, folic acid and iron. A lack of these essential nutrients and minerals can result in a condition called folic acid deficiency anemia.

B vitamins, iron and folic acid work together to produce red blood cells. These red blood cells  transport much needed oxygen to the bodies main organs to energize our bodies. When the body is lacking in these nutrients a person can quickly run out of breath when walking up a flight of stairs or feel weak and dizzy.

Vitamin B12 Deficiency And Depression

The Vitamin B family are involved in the development of chemicals within the human brain that can influence our moods. According to the Mayo clinic “Low levels of B-12 and other B vitamins such as vitamin B-6 and folate may be linked to depression.”

A lack of cyanocobalamin (vitamin B12) can be due to an unhealthy diet or the body losing its capacity to absorb the vitamin efficiently. Conditions such as pernicious anemia or people who need to undergo gastrointestinal surgery due to an inflammatory bowel disorder are unable to absorb nutrients from food effectively. For example, in the case of pernicious anemia the body is unable to develop a protein called the intrinsic factor. This protein is needed to help the body absorb B12 into the body.

According to the Mayo clinic “the role of B vitamins in depression isn’t clear. If you have a vitamin deficiency, taking a supplement may help. But no supplement can replace proven depression treatments such as antidepressants and psychological counseling. ”

Increasing Vitamin B12 Levels

One of the most common reasons for a lack of vitamin B12 can be due to the diet that people eat. Fortunately, vitamin B12 can be found in red meat, particularly liver, fish, eggs, milk and cheese. Unfortunately B12 cannot be found in fruit in and vegetables. To help increase your levels of B12 you can take vitamins & supplements with your meals.

For those people who have difficulties absorbing the vitamin a B12 patch placed directly on the skin can improve absorption into the body. One of the most effective ways to absorb the vitamin is via B12 injections or shots. In this way the vitamin is injected directly into the blood stream where it can be absorbed far more quickly and efficiently.

It is uncommon to have any serious side effects or allergic reactions to taking these injections however, B12 cobalamin injections should only be prescribed by a qualified doctor or physician.

If you recognize any of these B12 warnings signs and they become persistent you should seek medical advise as soon as you possibly can.
